December 2008 Newsletter

Our center will not be very busy during the Christmas break which means that you will have time to do some things with your child that you may not normally have the time to do.  Here are some ideas.

Visit the library in Freeport.  Check out books, play games, look at all the lovely trees that are part of the Festival of Trees celebration.  If you get there before December 20, you can vote for your favorite tree.

Go sledding in many places.  Some of the favorite places around Freeport are  Krape Park’s sledding hill, behind Lincoln Douglas School, and the hills at Highland Community College.

Play a game of cards with your child.  Does your child know how to play Go Fish, Crazy 8’s, and Old Maid?  How about Uno?  That is a great way to keep a bunch of children busy on a cold afternoon.  Teach your child to play checkers, or chess.  Introduce your child to logic games like Sudoku or other types of puzzles.

Take a drive around the community and marvel at all of the homes that are decorated for the season.   South of Freeport, on Chelsea Drive and Chelsea Court, there are several displays.  One has a light show set to music that directs you to turn your radio to a specific station to get the full effects.  The nativity scene at Bethany United Church of Christ is beautiful to behold, especially in the evening.   This display is right down the street near the intersection of Stephenson Street and Greenfield Drive.  Many folks may be familiar with the display that is generally put up for Halloween in the 1800 block of Revere Street.  That family now has a Christmas scene up for everyone to enjoy.  There are also many homes in that area that are in the decorating spirit.

Read a book to your child.  Even when children are reading confidently on their own, they enjoy being read to.  Perhaps you can sit down with your child and read the Christmas stories you may have read to your son or daughter when he or she was a preschooler.

Teach your child a new skill, or learn a new skill together.  Fleece hats and scarves are pretty easy to make and children delight in doing that.  They may also be more inclined to wear a hat they made and not to loose it as well!  There are easy directions on-line at www.ilovetocraft.com

Center hours during the break:  The Child Development Center will be open during the normal hours of 6:30 to 5:45 on December 22 through 24 and again December 29 through 31.  We will also be open on Friday January 2.  If your child is signed up to be here, please let me know if your plans change.  The office upstairs will not be open everyday, so please use the number for the Child Development Center, 232-3443.  If you did not sign your child up, and find yourself needing child care, please call before bringing your child.  We do not have room available on some days.

Changes...Changes...Changes:  If you use drop in care, please be aware that you will need to purchase the Flex Pass, either up in the office, or down in the CCDC.

You can purchase either five uses for $30.00 or ten uses for $60.00.   This method of paying will begin in Janua ry.

Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year
